While their names sound similar, luteolin and lutein are two distinct plant compounds. Luteolin is a flavonoid that’s found in vegetables such as radicchio, broccoli, green bell peppers, and carrots, as well as in herbs such as celery, parsley, and thyme. Research shows that luteolin possesses potent uric acid-lowering, antioxidant bioactivities and xanthine oxidase inhibition. Note: xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that helps break down purines, and in doing so generates uric acid and reactive oxygen species (free radicals). Lutein is classified as a carotenoid pigment found in dark green, leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach. Marigold flowers are the primary source for lutein-containing supplements. Lutein possesses powerful antioxidant properties, and has an affinity for eye health.
Measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), the traditional reference range of uric acid (i.e., the range of normal values for healthy people) is usually given as 1.5 to 6.0 mg/dL for women and 2.5 to 7.0 mg/dL for men, while some sources raised these values to 2.7 to 7.3 mg/dL for women and 4 to 8.5 mg/dL for men. For people diagnosed with gout, the traditional target is 6.0 mg/dL or below. However, these upper limits have been argued to be too high, as they merely protect against developing gout instead of protecting against metabolic health issues associated with elevated uric acid levels. An expert on the subject, Dr. David Perlmutter, recommends keeping uric acid at 5.5 mg/dL or below to achieve optimal results, while another expert, Dr. Bayne French, suggests 5.0 mg/dL. One study (https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/9/4/942) goes even lower, suggesting that the ideal target is less than 5.0 mg/dL for men and 2.0 – 4.0 mg/dL for women.
