Should I use Perpetuem or Sustained Energy?

Sustained Energy and Perpetuem are Hammer's long-distance fuels in powder form, made to be your main fuel when exercise goes beyond two hours. Choosing between them often comes down to personal preference, but there are some differences:

  • Calories: a 2-scoop serving of Perpetuem has 180 calories; a 2-scoop serving of Sustained Energy has 200 calories.
  • Ingredients: Sustained Energy has a 7:1 ratio of complex carbohydrates to soy protein and is fat free. Perpetuem has a ratio of about 8:1, plus 2 grams of fat (soy lecithin, sunflower oil) per 2-scoop serving, which also acts as a natural preservative and slows digestion slightly.

When would I use HEED or Perpetuem?

HEED is a carbohydrate-only drink mix for exercise up to about 3 hours. Perpetuem is a carbohydrate, protein and fat drink mix designed for longer workouts and races. If you would rather not drink large volumes of flavoured liquid hour after hour, you can make Perpetuem as a more concentrated multi-hour bottle and drink it alongside plain water.

I lost the scoop. How much is one scoop?

  • Creatine Boost: 1 level scoop = 6.5 cc = 1 1/3 tsp (serving: 1 scoop)
  • Hammer Greens: 1 level scoop = 11 cc = 2 1/3 tsp (serving: 1 scoop)
  • Plant Protein: 1 level scoop = 29.6 cc = 2 tbsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • HEED: 1 level scoop = 39 cc = 2 tbsp + 1 3/4 tsp (serving: 1 scoop)
  • Perpetuem: 1 level scoop = 39 cc = 2 tbsp + 1 3/4 tsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • Sustained Energy: 1 level scoop = 50 cc = 3 tbsp + 1 tsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • Recoverite: 1 level scoop = 50 cc = 3 tbsp + 1 tsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • Hammer Phood: 1 level scoop = 60 cc = 4 tbsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • Vegan Recoverite: 1 level scoop = 48 cc = 3 tbsp + 1/4 tsp (serving: 2 scoops)
  • Whey Protein: 1 level scoop = 53 cc = 3 tbsp + 1 3/4 tsp (serving: 1 scoop)
  • Endurolytes Extreme Powder: 1 level scoop = 3 cc = 1 tsp (serving: 1 scoop)

Which Endurolytes product should I use?

  • Endurolytes: the original full-spectrum electrolyte formula in capsules, for flexible dosing. Its modest salt content suits a low-salt diet.
  • Endurolytes Fizz: if capsules aren't for you, add these quick-dissolving tablets to your water bottle for a sugar-free electrolyte drink.
  • Endurolytes Extreme: for very hot conditions, athletes not yet used to the heat, and heavy sweaters. It has three times the sodium chloride and potassium of standard Endurolytes, and is available in capsules and powder.

Can I mix Perpetuem or Sustained Energy ahead of time?

Yes. You can mix bottles ahead of time; for best results, drink them within 48 hours. You can also freeze them. You may notice small crystals near the top of the bottle. These come from the l-carnitine in the formula, are normal and harmless, and the product is fine to consume.

Can I use Hammer fuels together?

Yes. Hammer Nutrition fuels are made to work together, so you can switch between them for variety, which is especially useful in ultra-distance events. For example, use Perpetuem or Sustained Energy from start to finish and add HEED or Hammer Gel from time to time. For events over two hours, aim to get at least two-thirds of your calories from Perpetuem or Sustained Energy. Hammer Gel and HEED can be used at any point during your workout.

Sustained Energy and Perpetuem can be mixed as a normal drink, as a concentrated multi-hour bottle, or as a thick paste carried in a Hammer Gel flask. Try each option in training to find what works best for you.

Why take a break between loading doses of Race Day Boost?

Taken continuously, the body gets used to sodium phosphate, the main ingredient in Race Day Boost. Each serving also contains sodium. For these reasons Hammer recommends 3 to 4 weeks off between loading doses. Follow the directions on the label.

Can I use several Hammer supplements together?

Yes. Hammer Nutrition supplements are designed to complement each other. A good place to start is the three Daily Essentials products: Premium Insurance Caps, Race Caps Supreme and Mito Caps. Most Hammer supplements contain nutrients specific to that product; where the same nutrient appears in more than one product, the combined amount is not excessive. Always follow the directions on each label.

How should I use Perpetuem Solids?

Perpetuem Solids can be used as your only source of calories, but they work best as a part-time solid food alongside Hammer's liquid fuels, helping you reach your hourly calorie target in events lasting more than two hours. Each tablet has 33.3 calories. Rather than chewing a whole tablet at once, break it in half or into smaller pieces; this makes it much easier to eat.
